Hi, I’m Carrie Murphy. I am a writer, full-spectrum doula, poet, mother, herbalist, and advocate. Body literacy, body autonomy, and reproductive justice inform all of my work in the world—from my writing to my support of pregnant, birthing, and postpartum people. I believe that all people should have access to knowledge, tools, and support in order to live healthy lives and make informed decisions.

I’ve written two poetry collections, FAT DAISIES (Big Lucks, 2015) and PRETTY TILT (Keyhole Press, 2012), as well as a chapbook, MEET THE LAVENDERS (Birds of Lace, 2011).  I have an MFA in Creative Writing from New Mexico State University. Originally from Baltimore, MD, I now live in Austin, TX with my family.

I have been a doula since 2012 and am active in national birth advocacy (including advocacy for doulas and the midwifery model of care). I am a co-founder and the former director of the New Mexico Doula Association and a co-founder and consultant to the UNMH Volunteer Birth Companion program. I hold a certificate in Public Health (Maternal Child Health) from the University of New Mexico. I am a former doula member of Birthmark, a birth justice collective in New Orleans.

My writing has appeared in or on ELLE, Glamour, Women's Health, U.S.Catholic, FitPregnancy, Parents, Refinery29 and many other websites and publications. I work with brands, organizations, and companies as a content and copywriter. My poetry has appeared in New South, Design*Sponge, The Rumpus, Columbia Poetry ReviewWord Riot, and other journals. Contact me here.
